Laser Vision Correction - Methods

Laser correction is effective in reducing or eliminating the dependence on eyeglasses or contact lenses. In Medical Center MAVIT, all available methods of laser treatment are used:

  • PRK - Photorefractive keratectomy
  • LASIK - Latin: Laser in situ keratomileusis
  • LASEK - Laser epithelial keratomileusis
  • EPI-LASIK - Epithelial LASIK
  • SBK-LASIK -  Sub-Bowman's keratomileusis
  • femtoLASIK - All-laser LASIK

With the new generation excimer laser MEL-80 we can also provide a customized treatmen programs, unique for each and every eye on the basis of:

  • corneal curvature based on the TOSCA algorithm (Topography Supported Customised Ablation)
  • highly accurate wavefront data from the WASCA Analyzer (Wavefront Aberration Supported Cornea Ablation) that gives reliability in presence of highly aberrated eyes

The customized treatment is possible to provide with CRS-Master - the intelligent combination of two diagnostic functions - aberrometry and topography.

LASIK/SBK-LASIK/femtoLASIK
LASIK surgery is effective in reducing or eliminating more severe refractive errors:

  • nearsightedness to -10,0 D
  • farsightedness to +6,0 D
  • astigmatism to 5,0 D

LASIK/SBK-LASIK procedure is performed in two stages.

Prior to the start of treatment, the eye is numbed. An accurate surgical instrument called microkeratome is used to cut the surface of the eye and create a flap of corneal tissue.

Next, the created flap is folded back and the laser reaches the part of cornea lying underneath.

The computerised laser precisely reshapes the cornea, thus changing its focusing power. After the laser pulses have been delivered, the flap is repositioned. Overall, the treatment lasts approximately 10-20 minutes and is painless.

femtoLASIK

The use of femtosecond laser VISUMAX Carl Zeiss Meditec with a new generation excimer laser MEL-80 Carl Zeiss Meditec give us a possibility to offer the newest refractive surgery method – femtoLASIK.
femtoLASIK method is a modification of LASIK.

During femtoLASIK the flap is creating with use of innovative femtosecond laser. The cut is for the first time lead by laser beam controlled by computer. The advantages are delicacy and safety of the procedure.

PRK/LASEK

With PRK or LASEK method we might eliminate:

  • nearsightedness from -1,0D to -8,0 D
  • mild farsightedness
  • astigmatism to 2,5 D

During PRK, after the eye has been numbed, the cornea epithelium is removed so as to enable the beam from the computerised laser to reach the tissue layers lying underneath. The laser reshapes the cornea, as in LASIK method, thus changing its focusing power. It will take about 3-4 days for the epithelium to heal over. To facilitate the healing process and reduce post-treatment pain, a protective contact lens might be placed onto the eye after the surgery.

LASEK method is a modification of PRK. During LASEK we remove the cornea epithelium as in PRK, but with special devices we make from it epithelial flap. The epithelial flap is removed for the laser reshaping, but then is used as a "natural bondage". A protective contact lens is placed onto the eye for 3-7 days. Leaving of the epithelial flap might reduce the post-op pain in some patients and might also improve the healing process. Sometimes it is impossible to create the epithelial flap. We proceed then with the PRK method.

EPI-LASIK method is a modification of LASEK. During EPI-LASIK method an epithelial seperator is used to seperate the epithelial flap from the eye. The epithelial flap is removed for the laser reshaping, but then is used as a "natural bondage". A protective contact lens is placed onto the eye for about 4 days.
The EPI-LASIK method will reduce the risks of adverse reactions with the alcohol and the post-op pain in some patients and might also improve the healing process. Sometimes it is impossible to create the epithelial flap. We proceed then with the PRK method.

With EPI-LASIK method we might eliminate:

  • nearsightedness from -1,0D to -7,0 D
  • mild farsightedness
  • astigmatism to 3,0 D
