Laser Vision Correction - LASIK

  • You will be escorted into the room that contains the laser system.
  • You will be asked to lie down on the treatment table with your face upwards.
  • The area around the eye will be disinfected and the eye itself will be numbed with some drops.
  • To protect the operated area, your face will be covered with an aseptic cloth.
  • An instrument will be placed between your eyelids to hold them open during the laser treatment. It will be painless.
  • The laser with an arm sticking out will be placed precisely above your eye. Do not worry, each stage of the procedure will be clearly explained to you by the doctor.
  • An instrument called a microkeratome will be used to create a flap of tissue at the surface of cornea. While the microkeratome is in operation, you are likely to hear some sounds; you will feel slight pulling and your vision may temporarily darken.
  • After the flap has been created, you will be asked to keep your eye positioned steadily, looking directly at the green light blinking in the laser arm.
  • The computerised laser, programmed especially for your defect, will reshape the cornea. During the laser treatment, the intensity of the green fixation light is likely to keep changing. It will take up to a minute and will be painless.

Remember! During the treatment you should precisely follow the doctor's instructions. The success of the treatment depends on you staring steadily at the green fixation light.
Remember! Throughout the whole treatment, the laser light is precisely directed and controlled by the doctor.

CO-OPERATION WITH THE DOCTOR IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT! IT MAY DECIDE THE FINAL RESULT OF THE TREATMENT.

  • The eye will be moistened and a protective contact lens will be placed into it.
  • Next, the 'eyelid-holder' will be removed and the eye will be protected with a plastic covering.
  • You will be escorted to a post-treatment room where you will rest for about an hour

After surgery, it is time to rest You should keep your eyes closed. Avoid squeezing or rubbing them as this may displace the protective contact lens!

  • After about an hour, your eye will be examined again. If no contraindications are found, you will be allowed to go home. The protective contact lens will facilitate the healing process and reduce the pain connected with epithelia regeneration.
  • You will be given some drops; the doctor will instruct you how and when to use them.
  • Next day, you should visit Medical Center MAVIT to have your eyes examined. Your questions, should you have any, will be answered. The dates of the following eye checks that are to assess the healing process and vision improvement will be appointed. The obligatory exams should take place on the 4th day, 3 weeks and 3 months after surgery.

Remember! Should you have any doubts or questions, do not hesitate to contact us!

AFTER SURGERY
Remember! Avoid squeezing or rubbing your eyes as this may displace the protective contact lens!

  • After the treatment, try to rest as much as possible.
  • After the treatment, you are likely to experience some discomfort: tearing, itching, sensitivity to light or 'foreign body' sensations (feeling that something is in your eye) - this is part of the normal healing process.
  • If your eye hurts, do not wait till it gets worse - take a painkiller.
  • Remember! Use only the drops recommended by the doctor.
  • Wearing sunglasses will make more it comfortable during this time.
  • Prevent any 'foreign' substance such as soap, water or cosmetics etc., from getting into the eye.
  • Avoid dusty places. Avoid smoking as the cigarette smoke is likely to irritate the eye.
  • Do not overheat the eye – avoid sunbathing, solarium and traveling to “hot” countries for one month.
  • Do not swim in a swimming-pool for one month.

WHAT MAY HAPPEN DURING THE LASIK TREATMENT?

  • In some patients, especially those with the so-called 'steep' cornea, a hole in the cornea flap may appear while the microkeratome is in operation. This prevents the treatment from being continued. The procedure may be repeated after a few months.

WHAT MAY HAPPEN AFTER LASIK TREATMENT?

  • In dim light, in rain, fog or snow, some patients may experience the change in the degree of vision contrast compared to that before the treatment. At night, some patients are likely to be dazzled by car lights. These symptoms occur mainly among patients with large pupils.
  • In a small percentage of cases, during the first 24 hours after the treatment, and later only after injuring the eye, the cornea flap may be displaced. It will be manifested by reddening of the eye, pain and impaired vision.
If you notice any of the above mentioned symptoms, contact Medical Center MAVIT immediately!

Complications and adverse events associated with the laser treatment are rare. They include among other:

    • Overcorrection or undercorrection
    • Loss of visual acuity in spite of optimal correction of the defect
    • Irregular astigmatism
    • Cornea epithelium growing into the cornea flap
    • Defect of the cornea epithelium or cornea flap
    • Increase in the intraocular pressure
    • Keratitis

    ON THE WHOLE...
Laser correction is effective in reducing or eliminating the dependence on eyeglasses and contact lenses. In Medical Center MAVIT we do our best to make it possible.

It is worth remembering that laser correction is not indicated for the reduction of presbyopia, i.e. impairment of vision connected with aging. Over time, the lens loses its flexibility. The eye's power of adjusting is weakened and that, in turn, influences the acuity of short- and long-distance vision. Laser correction does not eliminate the need for reading eyeglasses.

We do hope that laser correction of your eyesight defect will improve the quality of your life. No more steamy breakable specs, constantly falling off the nose!

You can be an active person, fully participating in all spheres of life.
